Do you enjoy eating out?  For those with hearing loss, sitting down to eat at a restaurant can be quite an ordeal. When it comes to having quiet conversation and spending time with family or friends, some restaurants are not conducive to being able to hear the conversation very well.  A recent article on Blogher had some fantastic tips on how to make the most of dining out with hearing loss:

“It just requires a little more forward planning to make sure we request a good seat in advance. This experience highlighted for me the key characteristics of a good restaurant for people with hearing loss and the importance, once again, of advocating for yourself.”

The article acknowledges that noisy restaurants can be a real challenge when you have hearing loss, but emphasizes that it doesn’t have to be that way.  It shares certain traits to look for in a ‘good for conversation’ restaurant.  It also identifies things that can be done to help in many restaurants that aren’t the best listening environments:

  • Look for restaurants with sound absorbing d├ęcor
  • Read reviews – some restaurants give noise level ratings
  • Ask for referrals
  • Ask for a quieter location before being seated
  • Ask for the music to be turned down a bit
  • Give the restaurant advance notice
