According to american-hearing.org, excessive noise exposure is the most common cause of hearing loss.  Healthyhearing.com recently released an article discussing the top five occupations that can be harmful to your hearing. The occupations they mention are:

1.       Manufacturing
2.       Construction/Carpentry/Mining
3.       Entertainment/Nightlife
4.       Military
5.       Agriculture/Farming

Interestingly, not all of these professions involve long-term exposure to harmful noise.  “Although long-term exposure to harmful noise levels is most commonly thought of when one thinks of job-related hearing loss, hearing loss on the job can also come from a single instance of high decibel noise exposure as well as exposure to ototoxic chemicals. No matter what the source, however, even these occupations that come with a high risk of noise related hearing loss can be made safer with proper precautions.”

Taking appropriate steps to protect your hearing in any high-risk noise environment is critical for your hearing health.  If you or a family member is working or has worked in a noisy environment, it may be a good idea to have your hearing checked.
