Soldier in the desert

The military and hearing loss have a long history together.  Constantly being around loud gunfire, heavy equipment, and explosions causes permanent damage to the inner ear. Putting in earplugs will protect a soldier from damaging noise; however, it won’t help with their auditory awareness or being able to hear quiet sounds such as someone sneaking up behind them.  NPR recently shared an article about a new hearing device that the military has been implementing to address this issue. It’s called TCAPS, or Tactical Communication and Protective System.  The device is really quite amazing.  It is capable of controlling or minimizing the volume of loud noises while simultaneously boosting the volume of quieter sounds like whispering.

In the military, there is always a sensitive line between protecting your hearing and being able to hear everything you need to.  The military understands the value of protecting the long term hearing health of their soldiers.  They also recognize the importance of good hearing for a soldier’s safety.  This new earplug seems to offer the best of both worlds.
