With approximately 48 million Americans dealing with hearing loss, chances are we all know someone impacted by hearing loss.  But for those who have normal hearing, it can be difficult to understand what they’re going through.

The Hearing Review recently published results from an independent poll conducted by Oticon Inc. providing a snapshot of some of the struggles associated with hearing loss in a typical day.  Here are some of their findings:

  • 88% frequently miss words in a conversation
  • 67% struggle to understand speech in noisy places
  • 43% have difficulty remembering what was said
  • 33% feel isolated or unable to “join in” the conversation

The online survey was completed by more than 2,000 people, 395 of which had some degree of hearing loss.  Results showed how those with hearing loss struggle to understand conversations, to recall conversations, and how they have to deal with ‘cognitive strain’ in typical listening situations that a normal hearing person doesn’t have to deal with.

Better understanding their challenges can help us engage more effectively with them and provide more meaningful support.
