New Regulations Involving Captioned Telephone Service

The captioned telephone industry is regulated by the Federal Government through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The recent growth in the number of people using the service has attracted attention from the FCC and they issued the following regulations that affect captioned telephone users:

  • CaptionCall users who received the phone prior to March 7, 2013 will need to provide a professional certification or pay $75 to use the captioned telephone.
  • Only a person registered to use a captioned telephone can use the phone with captions enabled.
  • Captioned telephone service providers must provide each user with a sticker for the phone stating "Federal Law prohibits anyone but registered users with hearing loss from using this device with the captions on."  CaptionCall has mailed stickers to all CaptionCall customers.
